Our Ingredients

Pure New Zealand Lanolin

Over 95% of its natural wax esters kept intact

Refine lanolin too hard and you strip out the compounds that make it work. Ours is cleaned lightly - pale, honey-toned, and almost scent-free, with none of the heavy lanolin smell you might remember.

Extracted with warm water, not harsh chemicals

Freshly shorn fleece is washed at around 70°C to release the natural wax, then spun in a centrifuge to separate it. That's the whole process - warmth and movement.

From grass-fed New Zealand sheep, mulesing-free

Shearing is something sheep need for their own health. The wax on the fleece is simply what's left behind. Mulesing is illegal here, and welfare standards are among the strictest anywhere.

What is Lanolin?

Lanolin is a natural wax produced by sheep to protect their wool and skin from the elements. It has been used in skincare for centuries, and for good reason.

Its molecular structure is remarkably similar to the lipids found in human skin, meaning it doesn't just sit on the surface. It absorbs deeply, works with your skin's own biology, and provides long-lasting hydration that synthetic alternatives simply can't replicate.

Why it works on your skin

What makes lanolin truly unique is that it contains no glycerol - meaning it's technically a wax rather than a fat. It's naturally rich in sterols like cholesterol, giving it an exceptional ability to bind with water and hold moisture in the skin for hours. It forms a breathable barrier, soothes dryness, and supports the skin's natural repair process.

It's the ingredient we built PoiPoi around, and the one that earns its place in everything we make.

What is Mānuka honey

Mānuka honey comes from bees that pollinate the Mānuka bush, a flowering plant native to New Zealand and found across our hillsides and coastal scrublands. It's one of the most studied and valued natural ingredients in the world - and New Zealand is its home.

What sets Mānuka honey apart from regular honey is its high concentration of methylglyoxal (MGO), a naturally occurring compound responsible for its potent antibacterial and healing properties. The higher the MGO rating, the more active the honey.

Why we use it

In skincare, Mānuka honey is valued for its ability to deeply hydrate, soothe inflammation, and support the skin's natural healing process. It draws moisture into the skin, helps calm sensitivity and redness, and provides a natural antimicrobial effect that keeps skin healthy. In our lip balms, it provides gentle conditioning and protection for lips exposed to sun, wind, and cold. In our toothpaste, its natural antibacterial properties contribute to a cleaner, fresher mouth without harsh synthetic additives.

Traceability

Our Mānuka honey is sourced from New Zealand. New Zealand has strict export standards for Mānuka honey to ensure its authenticity and potency, so when you see it in a PoiPoi product, you know it's the real thing.
